About Our Series: Choose This Day

Do you remember the story of Joshua in the bible? Chances are you probably sang about him in grade school. You remember the old spiritual song… “Joshua fit the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho… Joshua fit the battle of Jericho and the walls came a tumblin’ down!!!” (It always drove me crazy that it was “fit” and not “fought”…)

You remember the story, though, right? Joshua is leading God’s people and they come to the city of Jericho. And this city was surrounded by HUGE walls that were insurmountable and impenetrable without God’s help. But Jesus shows up to Joshua with sword in hand and gives him instructions on how to conquer Jericho. And to their credit, Joshua and the people obey. They march around the city for 7 days and miraculously God knocks the walls down!

For most people, that’s all they know about Joshua the person or Joshua the Old Testament book. But there’s a whole lot more to Joshua than the battle of Jericho. That’s just one of many battles fought in the book. Some that were successful and some that failed miserably.

The core issue in the book of Joshua isn’t the battle of Jericho, nor is it about winning or losing battles in general. It’s not about God’s people, nor is it even about Joshua. Sure these themes and people are all major parts of the book, but the reality is that the book of Joshua is about Jesus.

Joshua is a book about Jesus. It’s about being faced with a choice to either honor him or ignore him. To obey him or to sin against him. To follow his lead or to turn our backs.

Continually in the book of Joshua you see Jesus’ clear leading and instruction, and then you see God’s people wrestling with whether or not they want to or will obey him. These choices present themselves over and over to God’s people in Joshua. Sometimes they obey, other times they’re foolish and go their own way. But it all culminates in Joshua’s words of challenge at the very end of the book (and also near the end of his life). His words ring as true and timely to us as they did to the people of Israel in his day. Joshua says,

“Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.“

As we study Joshua we’ll be faced continually with a choice… love and honor Jesus, or love and honor myself. Worship and serve Jesus, or worship and serve my idols. Follow and obey Jesus, or turn my back to him.

Choose this day. Make a choice. Will Jesus be First or will you?

Message #3 of 18 – In Joshua 1 we see a vivid example of how God expects spiritual authority to work among his people. In all things, God is our ultimate authority, just as he was Joshua’s and all of Israel’s. Message #4 of 18 – Joshua sends two men into the land as spies to prep before the people cross the Jordan. In Jericho they meet a prostitute named Rahab who helps them with lodging and an escape from the city. In Joshua 2 God saves, redeems, and uses very ordinary people.

The Coming of Jesus (According to Matthew)

This December (2011) at Wawasee we’re celebrating Advent and looking at Matthew’s account of Jesus’ first coming as a baby at Christmas.

About Advent

The title “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus which means “coming”. It’s a season during with the Church has historically celebrated the first coming of Jesus Christ and consists of the four Sundays preceding Christmas. The Latin word adventus is a translation of the Greek word, parousia. Parousia is most commonly used in Scripture to refer to Jesus’ second coming, and when the Western Church (particularly German Lutherans) began the celebration of Advent, it was with the second coming of Jesus fully in mind. Just as God’s people waited centuries for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus, so believers today have been waiting for centuries for his second coming! Therefore, as we celebrate Advent and Christmas at Wawasee Bible, we delight in Jesus’ first coming as a vulnerable baby and look with great hope and expectation toward his second coming in glory!

Each morning we’ll light a candle on the advent wreath, with a focus on Jesus’ first and second comings. Each candle has historically carried with it a theme.

  1. Candle of Expectation or Hope in Jesus’ coming and what he will accomplish in each of his advents.
  2. Candle of Preparation, reminding us to be ready for his return.
  3. Candle of Joy (this is the pink one), reminding us of the great joy we have in Jesus and that we will have when he comes again!
  4. Candle of Love/Peace, reminding us that Jesus’ advent is entirely an expression of God’s gracious, underserved love toward us.
  5. On Christmas morning we’ll light the center white candle, or the Christ candle. Just like Jesus it is bright and stands in the center, reminding us that our sins—though as scarlet—have been made white as snow by the blood of Jesus! His birth was for his death, and his death for our new birth!

The obedience of Jesus’ adopted dad, Joseph, is a great example for us. He loved his wife Mary well and he was quick to obey God when God spoke to him. God speaks to us primarily through his written Word, and we, like Joseph, need to believe his Word and act upon it, no matter how we feel, because God promises a good result. (Matthew 1:18-25)

The Wise Men, The Fool, and Grace (Matthew 2:1-12)

Message #3 of 5 – Jesus would have been a toddler at the time a group of “wise men” from the east showed up at his mother’s door to worship the boy born as King of the Jews. Their journey was costly and the gifts they brought were incredibly valuable. Herod the Great (appointed by Rome to rule in that region as “King of the Jews”) was troubled by their arrival when he learned that a threat to his throne had been born nearby. But Jesus’ mother, Mary, would have experienced their arrival as an incredible expression of God’s grace and steadfast love. (Matthew 2:1-12)

Jesus Our Redeemer (Matthew 2:13-15)

Message #4 of 5 – Sometimes it seems like a weird detail that Jesus, Joseph, and Mary escaped to Egypt to avoid Herod’s insanity in Matthew 2, but the reason was to fulfill prophecy and to identify Jesus with his people. In the original Exodus of the Old Testament God redeemed his people from the captivity of Pharaoh. It all foreshadowed the new exodus where God redeems his people from the captivity of sin by the finished work of Jesus on the cross. (Matthew 2:13-15)

We’re in the process of restructuring our church membership at Wawasee Bible. As part of that, we’re taking the entire church through our new Membership Class on Sunday mornings from the pulpit. What We Believe #3 – Concerning The Human Condition

 In this session we cover the third article of our Statement of Faith: We believe that God created Adam and Eve in His image, but they sinned when tempted by Satan. In union with Adam, human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and under His wrath. Only through God’s saving work in Jesus Christ can we be rescued, reconciled and renewed. [This was taught as part of a restructuring of church membership at Wawasee Bible in the fall of 2011]

 In this session we cover the fourth article of our Statement of Faith: We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, one Person in two natures. He lived a sinless life, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest and Advocate. What We Believe #7 – Concerning The Church

 In this session we cover the seventh article of our Statement of Faith: We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God’s grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer. What We Believe #8 – Concerning Christian Living

 In this session we cover the eighth article of our Statement of Faith: We believe that God’s justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed. [This was taught as part of a restructuring of church membership at Wawasee Bible in the fall of 2011]

 In this session we cover the ninth article of our Statement of Faith: We believe in the personal, bodily and premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission. What We Believe #10 – Concerning Response and Eternal Destiny

 In this session we cover the tenth article of our Statement of Faith: We believe that God commands everyone everywhere to believe the gospel by turning to Him in repentance and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God will raise the dead bodily and judge the world, assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment and the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord in the new heaven and the new earth, to the praise of His glorious grace. Message #4 – The story of Noah is the story of the Gospel. Noah is saved by God’s grace, and his rescue foreshadows our own rescue by Jesus. God’s covenant with Noah demonstrates his relentless pursuing love and his vow to keep his promises—both to those who trust Jesus and to those who reject Jesus.

Message #5 – Abram was a sinful and idolatrous man for most of his life before meeting Jesus. God rescues him from his sin and calls him to follow him, leaving everything he ever knew at the ripe old age of 75. God would give Abram a son by the womb of his barren wife, Sarai. He changes their names to Abraham and Sarah and through their line in Isaac promises a coming Redeemer in Jesus. Though he was sinful and often full of doubt, God drew near to Abraham time and time again in covenant love as his protector and great reward.

Message #6 – We cover a very large portion of Scripture this week. Our focus in the Covenant series is to see God’s pursuing love, his covenantal love toward his people. The story of Passover and the Exodus is one of the clearest demonstrations of this in all of Scripture, foreshadowing plainly the coming life, ministry, and work of Jesus. Multiple applications are spread throughout the message this week, and we wrap with a focus on forgiveness.

Message #7 – God promises a Kingdom that will last forever to David in 2 Samuel 7. And the King who will reign and rule that Kingdom forever will come through David’s lineage. And that King will be and is Jesus. As citizens of Jesus’ Kingdom, now, and as a church that serves as an outpost of his Kingdom, we are to be all about honoring, serving, and loving our King. In short, it’s all about Jesus!

Message #8 – The crown of all the covenants is the New Covenant. The New Covenant is the Gospel. It is God’s incredible grace and mercy given to us in Jesus. The writer of Hebrews tells us that the New Covenant is a better covenant, founded upon better promises—because the one keeping both sides of the agreement is God himself, and God never breaks his promises.

25 Years of Ministry

This September, Wawasee Bible will celebrate a quarter century of gospel ministry in the Wawasee Community. For nearly 25 years, hundreds of people of all ages have entered our facility week in and week out to worship Jesus Christ, then leave to go out into the world to put into practice the things the Spirit has taught us. As we close out our 25th year of ministry, we want to do so in a way that launches us into the next 25 years, that we might take hold of all God has planned for us!

Seeking Things Above

On Sunday, May 1, 2011 we formally presented an exciting 6-month vision that we’re undertaking as a church family to enhance the ministry opportunities within our church, in our community, and around the globe! Based on Colossians 3:1-4, we’ve titled our vision “Seeking Things Above” and over the next six months we hope to give together toward a Faith Goal of $125,000. The majority of the funds given will be used to renovate the north wing of our facility so that we can enhance and expand our gospel impact—for God’s glory, our joy, and our community’s good!

It’s Not About Us!

We desire to reach as many people as possible with the hope and new life offered in Jesus Christ. We intend to commit the first 10% of every dollar given to Seeking Things Above to care for the poor and needy in our local community and to help some of the neediest people on our planet in India—all of it in the name of Jesus Christ! We continue to invest in our orphanage ministry in India and with these funds we are committing to again fund the construction of a new facility for a church plant in India.

We continue to support our orphanage ministry in India as well as care for the destitute sick, needy widows, and assist local churches there. As part of Seeking Things Above we are again committing to fund the construction of a new facility for a local church plant in central India. Helping Our Community
We give thousands of dollars every year to help the poor and needy in our local community through our benevolence ministry and food pantry. As part of Seeking Things Above we will give more toward helping those in our own community. Details of how Seeking Things Above funds will be used in community have yet to be announced. Check back later for updates as we consider how God would have us care for those around us.

Your Faith Commitment

On Sunday, June 5, 2011, we will make 6-month faith commitments as a church family to Seeking Things Above. This commitment is confidential and non-binding, but is an expression of what you believe God may provide through you. You will be invited to pledge an extra monthly gift above and beyond your regular tithes and offerings to Seeking Things Above.

Our Faith Goal: $125,000 over 6 months

June 5 will also mark the beginning of our giving period and everyone is invited to begin their giving with a generous cash gift as we establish momentum for the next six months. This will be done in the form of a second offering that morning, a “First Fruits” offering that will be given above and beyond both our regular tithes and our 6-month faith commitments.

Again, our Faith Goal is to raise $125,000 over six months. This is a first of its kind endeavor for our church! It’s a faith goal—not something easily attained, but one that requires sacrifice and faith that God will multiply our efforts! Here are a few questions to ponder as you consider what it will mean for you to give sacrificially to the Lord:<br /> • Is my giving proportionate to my income?<br /> • Am I motivated by joy and thankfulness?<br /> • Does my giving involve sacrifice and require faith?<br /> • Would my giving be a model for others to follow?<br /> • Have I adequately prayed about my commitment? The Lord gives us everything we need to accomplish his work. He entrusts resources into our hands, then asks us to trust him to multiply the results. The big question is this: Are you willing to accept the challenge to release your resources into his eternal work?

As you prayerfully consider the role God would have you play in this campaign, remember that we are being asked to give over and above our regular tithes and offerings. Realize that it is not about equal gifts, but equal sacrifice, as we all seek to be obedient to God’s leading.

Your gift to this campaign will impact countless lives for the Kingdom of God, including your own. And the greater your sacrifice, the greater your joy in witnessing the power of God as he transforms that sacrifice into changed lives. May we all commit together to Seeking Things Above and be Fully Devoted Followers of Jesus who Give Sacrificially!
